Government plans to raise tobacco tax

10 Apr 2019. The Czech Finance Ministry plans to increase the excise tax on tobacco and cigarettes by 10 per cent in 2020, Reuters reported.

With the raise the government intends to earn up to an additional CZK 7.7 billion (EUR 300 million) in revenue from the state budget, according to a proposal on the government's website on Friday.

The proposal must gain the support of the Parliament so that it can take effect. The government has tried to boost revenues to finance pensions and wage increases in the public sector as economic growth cools down, the report said.
